Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I have to make two separate payments?

By federal policy, passport fees are split into two distinct parts:

  • Department of State Fee: Covers the cost of processing and issuing your official U.S. passport. Make payable to “Department of State”.
  • Facility Acceptance Fee ($35): Covers the cost of processing your application at our acceptance facility. Make payable to “UC Regents”.

Because these funds go to two separate entities, they must be paid using different payment methods.

What payment methods are accepted for each fee?

  • Department of State Fees: Accepted via Check or Money Order only, payable to "U.S. Department of State".
  • UC San Diego Passport Office Fees: Accepted via Cash, Credit Card, Check, or Money Order, payable to "UC Regents".

Can I pay for my whole family with one check?

While a single payment for facility fees can cover multiple applicants, the Department of State prefers a separate check or money order for each individual passport application.

What is the difference between a Passport Book and a Passport Card?

  • Passport Book: Valid for all international travel by air, sea, or land.
  • Passport Card: Valid only for land border crossings and entry at seaports of entry when traveling to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean. It cannot be used for international air travel.

How do I get my passport faster, and what does it cost?

If you need your passport sooner than standard processing times (4-6 weeks), you can request Expedited Service (2-3 weeks) through the Department of State for an additional $60.

You can also add 1–3 Day Express Shipping for $23.36 to speed up the delivery of your completed passport once it has finished processing.

Both the Expedited Service and 1-3 Day Express Shipping fees must be included in the "U.S. Department of State" check or money order.
