What is a Notary Public?
A Notary Public is a state-commissioned official who verifies a signer’s identity and performs authorized notarial acts, such as acknowledgments and jurats. A notary does not provide legal advice or verify that a document is true or legally valid.
Who can use UC San Diego Notary Services?
Everyone! Our notary services are available to the Triton community and the general public.
Where are Notary Services available?
Notary Services are available only at the Passport Office location and are not available at Passports @ The Bookstore.
Why would I need something notarized?
A notarization may be required by law or requested by a business, government agency, or other organization to help verify the identity of the signer and deter fraud.
What should I bring?
Bring your complete document and acceptable identification. We recommend waiting to sign until you meet with the notary.
Why can’t you notarize an incomplete document?
California law prohibits a Notary Public from notarizing a document that is incomplete. This also helps protect signers from unauthorized changes or potential fraud.
Can you notarize documents for international use?
In many cases, yes. Some international documents may also require an Apostille after notarization. Apostilles are issued by the California Secretary of State.
